High-Temperature Heat-Treatment at 1673 K: Improvement of Pitting Corrosion Resistance at Inclusions of Type 304 Stainless Steel under Applied Stress

Abstract: MnS inclusions in Type 304 stainless steel were mainly transformed into oxide/oxysulfide inclusions by heat-treatment at 1673 K. In 0.1 M MgCl 2 under both the no-stress and stress conditions, the pitting potential of the steel heat-treated at 1673 K was higher than the steel heat-treated at 1373 K. The pitting potential of the stainless steel heat-treated at 1673 K did not decrease due to applied stress. For the steel heat-treated at 1673 K, the dissolution current of oxide/oxysulfide inclusions was lower tha… Show more

“…Pitting corrosion was generated at 0.13 V. The measurements with a 1 × 1 mm electrode area were made six times, and pitting occurred in two cases. A small electrode would be suitable for detecting the increase in current due to pitting with high sensitivity 55,56 . By stopping the polarization when a slight increase in current is detected, an early stage of pitting corrosion can be observed.…”

“…7. These inclusions primarily comprise elements of (Mg-Al-Ca-Si)-O, potentially sourced from smelting residues of deoxidizing agents like Mg, Al, and Si [52][53][54][55] . Within the inclusion, MgO often manifests as an irregular polygonal structure (as depicted in Fig.…”
