High-Temperature Self-Powered Sensing System for a Smart Bearing in an Aircraft Jet Engine

Abstract: Integrated health monitoring is beneficial but due to reliability, weight, size, wiring and other constraints, the incorporation of instrumentation onto aircraft propulsion systems is limited. Conventional wired sensing systems are not always feasible due to size, weight constraints, and issues associated with cable routing. This paper presents an integrated and selfpowered wireless system for high temperature (above 125 • C) environments powered by a thermoelectric generator for bearing condition monitoring. … Show more

“…However, the electromagnetic wave energy density in space is limited, and the power of this self-powered method is too low, so it is generally used in places with high electromagnetic field strength such as substations. Zaghari et al [16] of the University of South Preston in the United Kingdom developed a wireless sensor node that collects electromagnetic vibration energy and provides an output power of 58 μW.…”

“…This need implies that even testing activity, during product development, performs the machine condition monitoring (MCM), to test sensors, the data acquisition system, rotor-bearing system and the overall elements in advance, before that they are monitored in service. Moreover, some new concepts of smart bearing [4,5] gradually rise up, in the literature, as a useful tool for many industrial applications [1,[6][7][8]. The smart bearing system aims at reaching two main goals, i.e., an effective detection of bearing failure, for different operational regimes, as well as a useful monitoring of the machine behavior, through the bearing itself, when possible.…”

“…A plethora of older critical Cyber-Physical System are transitioning to wireless connectivity such as the use of Wireless Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) in the monitoring and control of SCADA systems including the electricity grid and industrial processes. Even aircraft and aerospace systems cannot resist the benefits of wireless connectivity [37]. Furthermore, emerging CPS technologies such as self-driving cars significantly rely on a multitude of wireless links for their operations.…”
