High thallium content in rocks associated with Au–As–Hg–Tl and coal mineralization and its adverse environmental potential in SW Guizhou, China

Abstract: Very few investigations have dealt with the environmental impact of the highly toxic metal thallium (Tl), and its subsequent dispersion through natural processes and human activities such as mining and farming. This study is focused on high concentrations of Tl in rocks in SW Guizhou, China, that are related to several widely scattered disseminated gold–mercury–arsenic and coal deposits, and a primary Tl deposit within an Au–As–Hg–Tl metallogenic belt of the Huijiabao anticline. The Tl, Hg and As in the Lanmuc… Show more

“…All sulfide minerals such as cinnabar, realgar, orpiment, arsenopyrite, and pyrite are rich in Tl, and the local deposits have a long mining history (>350 years) for mercury but have been worked exclusively for the Tl mineral lorandite in the 1990s until 2000. 33,34 The soil horizons in the Lanmuchang area are not well developed (Oxisol). The soils mainly originate from the weathering of outcrops and they accumulate naturally on the slight to moderately steep slopes within the mineralized area, including in alluvial and colluvial deposits ("red clay").…”

“…Potassium levels are typically lower in soil and grass of higher altitudes [15], whereas Rb contents again vary depending on the geologic underground [1]. Thallium (Tl) is enriched, for example, in some areas of France [16] and China [17], which likely facilitates the diVerentiation between French poultry from that of Brazil, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland, and Thailand [6]. SpeciWc element proWles, resulting from anthropogenic inXuences, especially pollution, include As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Tl, and Zn [e.g.…”

“…Thallium pollution is mainly due to widespread use of Tl-containing minerals in industry. For example, mining of Hg-As-Tl deposits at Lanmuchang in Guizhou, southwestern China, led to severe Tl poisoning in local residents during the 1960–1970s (Xiao et al, 2004a; Xiao et al, 2004b; Xiao, Guha & Boyle, 2004c; Xiao et al, 2007; Xiao et al, 2012). Waste discharge from a Pb-Zn smelter using Tl-bearing minerals resulted in Tl pollution in the Northern Branch of the Pearl River in 2010 (Liu et al, 2016b; Liu et al, 2017).…”
