High Throughput Bioassays Using Nanoparticles

Abstract: An overview of the usefulness of different nanoparticles to improve the features of high throughput separation and individual and multiplexed detection bioassays is presented. Although the development of microarray and microfluidic systems has expanded the capabilities of these high throughput assays, the combined use of NPs and these devices has provided them with new applications in drug discovery, proteomic and genomic studies, and clinical diagnosis. This article reviews the wide application field of magne… Show more

“…Miniaturization with nanotechnology has also improved the speed and efficiency of existing bioassays and spurred development of new measurement techniques to allow the use of smaller samples and smaller amounts of reagents, less processing, more rapid interrogation, and lower limits of detection. 1 These methods take advantage of the unique properties of nanostructures, which exhibit optical, chemical, structural, and electronic behaviors that are not observed for bulk material.…”

“…The ability to reliably and reproducibly conjugate antibodies to nanoparticles is key to developing platforms for next generation technologies from diagnostics to therapeutics . Applications include single molecule tracking, cell sorting, bioseparations, quantitative assays for protein detection, enzyme immobilization, protein purification, immunoasays, along with in vivo applications such as targeted contrast agents for imaging and targeted drug/gene delivery. …”

“…Phthalates are available in free form and not chemically bound in plastic. As a result, they can potentially migrate from packaging materials into our food and beverages and cause contamination during production and storage (Gomez-Hens & Aguilar-Caballos, 2003). The compound has become a health concern due to its endocrine disrupting properties (LaFleur & Schug, 2011).…”
