High-throughput migration modelling for estimating exposure to chemicals in food packaging in screening and prioritization tools

Abstract: Specialty software and simplified models are often used to estimate migration of potentially toxic chemicals from packaging into food. Current models, however, are not suitable for emerging applications in decision-support tools, e.g. in Life Cycle Assessment and risk-based screening and prioritization, which require rapid computation of accurate estimates for diverse scenarios. To fulfil this need, we develop an accurate and rapid (high-throughput) model that estimates the fraction of organic chemicals migrat… Show more

“…This model uses a four-compartment mass-balance approach that includes near-person and far-person surfaces (in the same indoor environment), air, and the applied product (Wang et al 2016), with transfers between near-person and far-person surfaces to simulate the movement of a person when cleaning surfaces. The food contact material model estimates the fraction of organic chemicals migrating from polymeric packaging materials into food matrices as a function of diffusion coefficients within packaging materials and packaging-food partition coefficients (Ernstoff et al 2017). Indoor sorption is considered across product-specific models and detailed in ESM, Section S-2d.…”

“…On the exposure assessment side, our framework already contains several product categories (e.g. building materials, 71 toys, 72 food contact materials, 73,74 cosmetics, 25 personal care products, 30,75 cleaning and home maintenance products, and pesticide active ingredients 76 ), but various product categories still need to be introduced (e.g. electronics, textiles).…”
