High-Throughput Screening Using a Synchronized Pulsed Self-aspiration Vacuum Electrospray Ionization Miniature Mass Spectrometer

Abstract: With the advantages of rapid analysis, high sensitivity, and multicomponent identification, mass spectrometry (MS) is recognized as an appealing choice for high-throughput screening (HTS) analysis. Aiming at the small size, simple operation, and adequate performance, the development of miniature mass spectrometers has made great progress over the last 2 decades. Besides the essential analytical performance, simple operation and HTS capability are two other crucial features desired in miniature MS instruments. … Show more

“…IM-MS, ion mobility-mass spectrometry; LIT, linear ion traps. [Color figure can be viewed at wileyonlinelibrary.com] analysis, this group proposed an induced self-aspiration vacuum electrospray ionization source and coupled it to a miniature ion trap mass spectrometer (Zhu et al, 2022) (Figure 3D). With a special timing sequence to synchronize all the operation steps, this DAPI system accomplished the automatic high-throughput analysis of multiple samples with an analysis speed of 7 s per sample and sample consumption of less than 100 nL.…”

“…To reduce equipment footprints and simplify instrumental operation, miniaturization of mass spectrometers becomes a practical requirement. [17][18][19][20][21][22] As a response, in recent years, the development of Mini-MS has made great progress. [23][24][25][26][27][28] In particular, by adopting the continuous atmospheric pressure interface (CAPI), the Mini-MS coupled with ambient ionization sources could greatly simplify sample preparation procedures, and make rapid on-site chemical analysis possible.…”

“…This study was mainly carried out with a homemade ion trap mass spectrometer, which has been depicted previously. , The main components are shown in Figure S1, including a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lamp (10.6 eV, PKS 106, Heraeus Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG), a linear ion trap (LIT), and an ion detector. The instrument adopts a discontinuous interface and a single vacuum chamber.…”
