We examine the coherent spin-dependent transport properties of the van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet Fe 4 GeTe 2 using density functional theory combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function method. Our findings reveal that the conductance perpendicular to the layers is half-metallic, meaning that it is almost entirely spin-polarized. This property persists from the bulk to a single layer, even under significant bias voltages and with spin−orbit coupling. Additionally, using dynamical mean field theory for quantum transport, we demonstrate that electron correlations are important for magnetic properties but minimally impact the conductance, preserving almost perfect spin-polarization. Motivated by these results, we then study the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) in a magnetic tunnel junction consisting of two Fe 4 GeTe 2 layers with the vdW gap acting as an insulating barrier. We predict a TMR ratio of ∼500%, which can be further enhanced by increasing the number of Fe 4 GeTe 2 layers in the junction.

In the quest for 2D conducting materials with high ferromagnetic ordering temperature the new family of the layered FenGeTe2 compounds, especially the near‐room‐temperature ferromagnet Fe4GeTe2, receives a significant attention. Fe4GeTe2 features a peculiar spin reorientation transition at TSR ≈ 110 K suggesting a non‐trivial temperature evolution of the magnetic anisotropy (MA)—one of the main contributors to the stabilization of the magnetic order in the low‐dimensional systems. An electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic study reported here provides quantitative insights into the unusual magnetic anisotropy of Fe4GeTe2. At high temperatures the total MA is mostly given by the demagnetization effect with a small contribution of the counteracting intrinsic magnetic anisotropy of an easy‐axis type, whose growth below a characteristic temperature Tshape ≈ 150 K renders the sample seemingly isotropic at TSR. Below one further temperature Td ≈ 50 K the intrinsic MA becomes even more complex. Importantly, all the characteristic temperatures found in the ESR experiment match those observed in transport measurements, suggesting an inherent coupling between magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom in Fe4GeTe2. This finding together with the observed signatures of the intrinsic two‐dimensionality should facilitate optimization routes for the use of Fe4GeTe2 in the magneto‐electronic devices, potentially even in the monolayer limit.

Abstract2D magnetic materials are garnering significant interest due to their high carrier mobilities, valley pseudospins, tunable bandgaps, and novel spin textures enabling exciting opportunities to explore unique nonlinear optical phenomena and develop next‐generation magneto‐optic and optoelectronic devices. Recently, the FenGeTe2 (FnGT) family of 2D magnets has emerged as a promising candidate for spintronic applications due to their non‐trivial spin textures in low dimensions compared to bulk materials. A coherent interaction is reported between light and suspended FnGT nanoflakes (NFs), resulting in spatial self‐phase modulation (SSPM), a direct manifestation of the optical Kerr effect. The nonlinear refractive index (n2) and third‐order optical susceptibility (χ(3)) are quantitatively estimated from the self‐diffraction patterns of FnGT NFs. The time evolution of the self‐diffraction patterns aligns with the “wind‐chime” model, and the deformation of rings is analyzed in terms of thermal effects. FnGT systems exhibit strong optical non‐linearity (χ(3) ∼ 10−8 esu), an order of magnitude higher than other metal dichalcogenides and 2D magnets. Furthermore, all‐optical logic gates have been realized using cross‐phase modulation. The FnGT family of 2D magnets, with their high curie temperature and robust higher‐order optical nonlinearities, are promising candidates for future magneto‐optical and optoelectronic device applications.
