High‐voltage atmospheric cold plasma treatment of different types of starch films

Abstract: High‐voltage atmospheric cold plasma is a novel, environmentally friendly technology that has gained significant attention in recent decades. It has shown promising results for surface modification and decontamination. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of high‐voltage atmospheric plasma treatment at 80 kV for 5 min on starch films of different origins (rice, potato, tapioca, corn) with varying amylose content. Cold plasma treatment resulted in an increase in glass transition temperature, surfa… Show more

“…The TS of native, 20, 50, 80, and 100 kGy irradiated starch films are 2.15, 2.95, 3.26, 3.64, and 3.99 MPa, respectively (Figure 5(A) and (B)). Kithul starch film in native form has higher TS as compared with corn, [ 4 ] sago, [ 9 ] sorghum, [2a] and cassava [ 12 ] starch films. Films of the irradiated starch show significantly ( p ≤ 0.05) higher TS than native starch film.…”

“…The advent of plasma has revolutionized the surface modification for producing a variety of thin coatings on all types of materials. Applying this technique can bring full advantages of strong adhesion, chemical, thermal and mechanical stabilities in addition to time and cost‐effective synthesizing (44–59).…”

“…In addition, cold plasma has been studied as a processing aid to functionalize organic compounds (Pankaj et al, 2017). Collisions of electrons with molecular or atomic gases generate a series of reactions that lead to the formation of ions, radicals, and other excited plasma species that are highly reactive.…”
