The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a global shift towards online learning, necessitated by restrictions on physical interaction. Consequently, Multimedia Creative Courses incorporating Service Learning were transformed into Extreme e-Service Learning (Xe-SL), conducted entirely online. In the realm of online e-Service Learning, ensuring student engagement and knowledge retention are crucial to successful course completion. While behavioural engagement can be easily observed, assessing cognitive engagement presents a challenge. Cognitive engagement involves the learner's psychological investment in the learning process, their willingness to comprehend the material, and their drive to attain the highest levels of understanding.This study explores the cognitive engagement of students in Extreme e-Service Learning (Xe-SL), an online learning approach implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. A case study was conducted involving 27 undergraduate students undertaking a Multimedia Creative project within Xe-SL. Thematic analysis of collected reflections revealed distinct patterns of cognitive engagement across different phases. Prior to Xe-SL, students demonstrated cognitive engagement through understanding concepts, problem solving, critical thinking, self-reflection, and self-improvement. During Xe-SL, cognitive engagement was evident in the acquisition of new skills and tools, overcoming challenges, reflection, and recognizing the impact and benefits of their work. Post-Xe-SL, students exhibited increased skills and knowledge, engaged in teaching and mentorship, fostered collaboration and teamwork, applied problem-solving skills, and retained and applied their knowledge.These findings provide insights into the cognitive engagement processes within Xe-SL and offer practical guidance for designing effective online learning activities. Furthermore, the study highlights the enduring impact of Xe-SL on students' skills, collaboration abilities, problem-solving proficiency, and knowledge application. This research contributes to the understanding of effective online pedagogy and underscores the benefits of Xe-SL. Educators, instructional designers, and policymakers can leverage these findings to enhance student engagement and promote meaningful learning experiences in online service learning environments.

Indonesian language is among the most studied languages abroad. There are differences regarding the regulation, facilities, and learning design on the teaching of Indonesian language in domestic and foreign settings. This research aimed to identify the teaching of Indonesian language at senior high schools in Australia from a digital perspective. It implemented a qualitative survey research method. The interviewees were the Indonesian language teachers at a senior high school in Australia, i.e., Victorian School of Languages. Due to the limited respondents, time and distance, the samples were chosen using snowball sampling technique. The data were obtained from questionnaire shared on Google Form filled out by two Indonesian language teachers at a senior high school in Victoria, Australia, and structural observation on the available digital platform. The data gained from observation, interview, and document were analyzed using data triangulation. The findings revealed that the teaching of Indonesian language at Australian senior high schools makes use of technology implementation, i.e., in the form of distance and blended learning in line to Australian education regulation. Other than teaching the language, the teachers also introduce the culture to create a strong bond between the students and the Indonesian culture. It is understood that the integration of Indonesian culture through technology in the teaching of Indonesian language can help increase the number of students interested to study the language at Australian senior high schools.

PurposeThe study analyzed how the service-learning (SL) methodology can become a university social responsibility (USR) strategy that generates shared value for the university and its stakeholders.Design/methodology/approachThis qualitative and exploratory–descriptive research had a nonexperimental field and cross-sectional design that used field techniques such as focus groups and in-depth interviews with the participants of the USR program “MIPyME vs COVID-19” in two Latin American countries.FindingsThis study revealed the perceptions of students who participated in the USR program on how a virtual service-learning (vSL) strategy related to the use of technology generates a positive impact on the development of shared learning between students and micro-entrepreneurs from a global and Latin American perspective, as well as for the internationalization of their study plans.Research limitations/implicationsThe field study was conducted in only two Latin American countries; however, the USR program has been implemented in eight universities from eight Latin American countries with very similar social, political and health contexts.Originality/valueIt is one of the first studies on SL used in a strategic and articulated way in universities with a USR approach. It analyzed traditional evaluations of this methodology, incorporating others such as virtuality (produced by the effects of the COVID-19), which led the authors to generate methodological innovations based on new ways of connecting, linking and generating shared learning and value for all.
