Higher Education Interdisciplinarity: Addressing the Complexity of Sustainable Energies and the Green Economy

Abstract: Universities play a strategic role towards a sustainable future, as they address the complex scientific research on green transition and enable students from diverse backgrounds to acquire different skills, integrate multiple perspectives, and handle the sustainability of the ongoing and future renewable energy sector. In this paper, we describe a collaborative project between multiple HEIs (European and African) and local institutions, which promotes an interdisciplinary approach to address climate change and… Show more

“…This is closely aligned with an international trend where aspects related to climate change, energy crisis, sustainable cities, and water are predominant in studies of experimental sciences ( Leal Filho et al, 2019 ) and engineering ( Alexa et al, 2020 ). However, while the environment is one of the pillars of sustainability ( Menon and Suresh, 2020 ; Zacchia et al, 2022 ), ES goes beyond this reductionist representation of sustainability and aims to foster a more holistic approach ( Morrison-Saunders et al, 2022 ).…”

“…4) Promoting education on energy transition : [14][15][16][17] through their schools and universities, the public sector can integrate inclusive education on green and sustainable energy habits into formal curricula. This collaboration can help educate future generations about the importance of sustainable energy practices and empower them to become active contributors to the energy transition.…”

“…From a STEM learning perspective, PV is an interdisciplinary field requiring the intersection of knowledge across all STEM disciplines to advance solar cell technologies and integrate them with new and existing energy systems (Begmatovich & Anora, 2021;Biniet & Nielsen, 2016;Brogren and Green 2003;Zacchia et al, 2022). Foundational understanding of PV, for instance, includes comparing the electrical conductivity of semiconductor materials, understanding technological tools and chemical processes associated with the manufacturing of solar cells, tracking and calculating the energy generation and transfer through PV electrical power systems, and designing novel applications of solar energy.…”
