Higher Hb level is associated with better early functional recovery after hip fracture repair

Abstract: Higher postoperative Hb level may improve functional recovery after hip fracture repair. If confirmed with clinical trials, this finding would provide a rationale to maintain higher Hb concentrations in elderly patients recovering from surgery.

“…A large number of research has been done to investigate the impact of different variables on recovery after hip fracture surgery [8][9][10]. The effect of perioperative anemia on surgical mortality and morbidity in hip fracture patients has also been addressed in literature [11][12][13][14]. However, a limited number of studies have investigated the relationship between admission hemoglobin level and hip fracture outcome [15][16][17].…”

“…transfusion therapy and increased rates of postoperative infection. [13][14][15] Admission Hb levels have also been shown to impact on postoperative functional recovery in an elderly population with hip fractures 9,16,17 and on quality of life after total hip arthroplasty. 18 Due to the surge of new anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs these guidelines require frequent updating.…”

“…This may be due to the limitations of the previous experimental studies, and the knowledge that anemia in the immediate postoperative period can impede early recovery and prolong hospital stay. 57,58 According to "ClinicalTrials.gov", the settings in progress are acute myocardial infarction, cardiac surgery, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, acute leukemia, and vascular surgery. All studies are conducted in adults aged 18 years or older.…”
