Higher left ventricular wall thickness and forearm blood flow may be associated with higher systolic blood pressure in swimmers

Abstract: In healthy individuals, swimming seems to increase resting systolic blood pressure (SBP). However, the mechanisms responsible for SBP elevation associated with swimming have not been elucidated. Therefore, this study investigated cardiovascular morphology and function in healthy young male swimmers. Brachial SBP was higher in swimmers than nonswimmers. Left ventricular (LV) wall thickness and forearm blood flow (BF) and vascular conductance (VC) were also higher in swimmers relative to non-swimmers. In a stepw… Show more

“…Aortic PWV and baPWV were measured using applanation tonometry (Hayashi & Otsuki, 2019;Otsuki et al, 2007) and air plethysmography (Otsuki et al, 2016(Otsuki et al, , 2019, respectively. Carotid, femoral, brachial and posterior tibial artery pulse waves were obtained using a pulse wave analyser (BP-203RPE II; Fukuda Colin).…”

“…SV was calculated as the product of the cross-sectional area and BF velocity integral in the left ventricular outflow tract just below the aortic valve attachment site (Hayashi & Otsuki, 2019). The crosssectional area was measured using B-mode echocardiography in the parasternal long axis view with a 2.5 MHz probe (Nemio SSA-550A;…”

“…Aortic PWV assessment. Aortic PWV was measured as described in our previous study, with minor modifications 10,11) . Briefly, carotid and femoral artery pulse waves were obtained in the supine position in triplicate by arterial applanation tonometry (BP-203RPE II; Omron Colin, Tokyo, Japan).…”
