Highly effective adsorption removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from aqueous solution using calcined layer-like Mg-Al hydrotalcites nanosheets

Abstract: To study the influence factors of calcined layer-like Mg-Al hydrotalcites nanosheets adsorbing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in aqueous solution, Mg-Al hydrotalcite (HMA) nanosheets were prepared by one-step hydrothermal synthesis. The effect of calcination temperature on adsorption properties and structure of HMA (CHMA-x, x means different calcination temperature) was investigated. The prepared samples were systematically characterized by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric a… Show more

“…The results indicate that the material is mesoporous and has a mesoporous structure. 42 The adsorption branch and desorption branch curves of p / p 0 are almost coincident in the range of 0–0.4, however there is a capillary condensation-induced hysteresis loop in the region of 0.8–1.0. 43 Using adsorption branch data, the pore distribution was examined using the BJH method.…”

“…Adsorption kinetics can reflect the relationship between adsorption time and adsorption amount of the adsorbent in the adsorption process, which is also one of the important indexes to evaluate the excellent adsorbent. 46 At present, the commonly used adsorption kinetic models include first-order and second-order kinetic models, and their mathematical formulae are shown by equations ( 4) and (5): 47,48…”

“…As a result, the interior of the cavity is hydrophobic, while the exterior of β-CD is hydrophilic and thus appropriate for participating in interactions of hydrophobic materials in hydrophilic solutions or water. Yang et al, 2020 [46], studied the role of crosslinking tripods with three amido or amino functional groups and β -CD in the binding capacity and affinity for anionic PFAS components. Amine-containing β -CD polymers yielded more efficient removal for approximately 10 anionic PFAS.…”

“…Chang et al's, 2019 [48], results indicate that the adsorption capacity for PFOA is greater with anionic surfactants compared to GAC, PAC, and resins. Chang et al, 2020 [49], and Yang et al, 2020 [46], tested modified HD, through calcination and decomposition, resulting in improved PFOA and PFOS adsorption capacities from the original HD, demonstrating their potential as adsorbents for the removal of PFAS from wastewater and drinking water.…”
