Highly Efficient Encapsulation and Phase Separation of Apolar Molecules by Magnetic Shell‐by‐Shell‐Coated Nanocarriers in Water

Abstract: We report on the development of a supramolecular nanocarrier concept that allows for the encapsulation and separation of small apolar molecules from water. The nanocarriers consist of shell-by-shell-coated nanoparticles such as TiO and ferromagnetic Fe O . The first ligand shell is provided by covalently bound hexadecyl phosphonic acid (PAC ) and the second shell by noncovalently assembled amphiphiles rendering the hybrid architecture soluble in water. Agitation of these constructs with water containing the hy… Show more

“…Subsequently, the mono‐shell‐functionalized NPs were subjected to a second, in this case non‐covalent, functionalization by treatment with the amphiphiles A 1 , A 2 , or A 3 and simultaneous dispersion of the reaction products [Al 2 O 3 ‐(PAR 2–4 X % PAR 1 (100− X )% )]A 1–3 in water or hexafluorobenzene, respectively (Scheme and ). During this procedure a polarity umpolung induced by the second ligand shell takes place according to the new supramolecular construction concept that we have reported recently . As a result, a micellar arrangement formed involving lipophilic interactions between the nonpolar parts (R 1 –R 4 ) of the first layer and the lipophilic termini of A 1–3 .…”

“…Our group has further exploited this construction principle and has also coined the term “shell‐by‐shell (SbS)‐assembly” [1a–c, 11] . We have recently investigated suitable building blocks for the SbS‐functionalization of metal oxide NPs containing phosphonic acids as first‐shell building blocks and amphiphilic molecules as second‐shell building blocks for the construction of water‐dispersible NP hybrid systems [1a] .…”

“…Furthermore, we created confined space coronas within SbS‐structured NP hybrids, in which an electronic communication between organic units with different electron demand was facilitated [11] . SbS‐systems could also be used as water‐cleaning materials [1c] and as X‐ray sensitizing agents in radiotherapy [1e] . Our Review describes first the general functionalization principle and then sets the focus on our recently published work with interesting implications and applications of such highly hierarchical ordered nano‐systems.…”
