“…The effects of micropollutants (MPs) such as antibiotics on human health have attracted widespread attention. Ferrate (Fe­(VI)) is widely investigated in MP oxidation because it gives the nontoxic decomposition product Fe­(III), can be used over a wide pH range, and has a strong oxidation capacity. Additionally, because of the selective oxidation of electron-rich MPs, ferrate is less affected by coexisting substances in water compared to sulfate-based advanced oxidation processes. However, Fe­(VI) has an extremely fast hydrolysis rate in water, which leads to self-quenching of high-valent iron intermediates like Fe­(IV) and Fe­(V), and this affects its application to MP oxidation. , Therefore, improving the contribution of reactive species to the oxidation of MPs by avoiding self-quenching is of importance for decreasing the amount of required ferrate and promoting the oxidation efficiency of MPs. ,, …”
