Poly-Phthalocyanine–Doped Graphene Oxide Nanosheet Conjugates for Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Drug Residues

Donor and acceptor phthalocyanine molecules were copolymerized and linked to graphene oxide nanosheets through amidation to yield electrocatalytic platforms on glassy carbon electrodes. The platforms were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The fabricated electrochemical catalytic surfaces were then evaluated toward electrocatalytic detection of ascorbic acid and tryptophan. These were characterized by a wide linear dynamic range and low limits of detection and quantification of 2.13 and 7.12 µM for ascorbic acid and 1.65 and 5.5 µM for tryptophan, respectively. The catalytic rate constant was 1.86 × 104 and 1.51 × 104 M−1s−1 for ascorbic acid and tryptophan, respectively. The Gibbs energy for catalytic reactions was −17.45 and −14.83 kJ mol−1 depicting a spontaneous reaction on the electrode surface. The sensor platform showed an impressive recovery when applied in real samples such as fresh cow milk, in the range 91.71–106.73% for both samples. The developed sensor therefore shows high potential for applicability for minute quantities of the analytes in real biological samples.

Green Synthesis of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks: A Review of Their Characterization and Industrial and Medical Applications

Metal organic frameworks (MOF) are a class of hybrid networks of supramolecular solid materials comprising a large number of inorganic and organic linkers, all bound to metal ions in a well-organized fashion. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a sub-group of MOFs with imidazole as an organic linker to metals; it is rich in carbon, nitrogen, and transition metals. ZIFs combine the classical zeolite characteristics of thermal and chemical stability with pore-size tunability and the rich topological diversity of MOFs. Due to the energy crisis and the existence of organic solvents that lead to environmental hazards, considerable research efforts have been devoted to devising clean and sustainable synthesis routes for ZIFs to reduce the environmental impact of their preparation. Green chemistry is the key to sustainable development, as it will lead to new solutions to existing problems. Moreover, it will present opportunities for new processes and products and, at its heart, is scientific and technological innovation. The green chemistry approach seeks to redesign the materials that make up the basis of our society and our economy, including the materials that generate, store, and transport our energy, in ways that are benign for humans and the environment and that possess intrinsic sustainability. This study covers the principles of green chemistry as used in designing strategies for synthesizing greener, less toxic ZIFs the consume less energy to produce. First, the necessity of green methods in today’s society, their replacement of the usual non-green methods and their benefits are discussed; then, various methods for the green synthesis of ZIF compounds, such as hydrothermally, ionothermally, and by the electrospray technique, are considered. These methods use the least harmful and toxic substances, especially concerning organic solvents, and are also more economical. When a compound is synthesized by a green method, a question arises as to whether these compounds can replace the same compounds as synthesized by non-green methods. For example, is the thermal stability of these compounds (which is one of the most important features of ZIFs) preserved? Therefore, after studying the methods of identifying these compounds, in the last part, there is an in-depth discussion on the various applications of these green-synthesized compounds.

The analysis of positional isomers is of great significance because their different chemical properties but similar structures make separation difficult. In this work, a simple method for simultaneously discriminating three positional isomers of 2-aminobiphenyl (2-ABP), 3-ABP, and 4-ABP was studied by ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) and quantum mechanical calculations at the molecular level. In the experiments, three ABP isomers were mixed with α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins (CD), and the IMS results show that the three ABP isomers were clearly recognized by the formed complex of [α-CD + ABP + H]+ via measuring their IMS, in which the different ion mobilities of 1.515, 1.544, 1.585 V·s·com–2 with the collision cross sections (CCS) of 307.3, 312.5, 320.8 Å2 were obtained for [α-CD + 2-ABP + H]+, [α-CD + 3-ABP + H]+, and [α-CD + 4-ABP + H]+, respectively. Collision induced dissociation analysis of the three [α-CD + ABP + H]+ isomer complexes were further studied, indicating that the same fragmentation process required different collisional energies, and the greater the CCS for the [α-CD + ABP + H]+ with looser structure and the smaller energy required. Besides, the favorable conformation and the CCS value of the different [CD + ABP + H]+ isomer complexes were measured via quantum mechanical calculations to detail their intermolecular interactions. It revealed that the intermolecular binding between 2-ABP and α-CD is different from that of 3- and 4-ABP, resulting in different molecular conformations and CCS, and the interaction modes of ABP with β-CD are similar to that with γ-CD, which are very consistent with the experimental observations. Finally, relative quantification of the method was performed, and satisfactory linearity with correlation coefficients (R 2) greater than 0.99 was obtained. This method for isomer discrimination and conformation analysis possesses the advantages of simplicity, sensitivity, cost-effectiveness, and as such it may be widely applied in chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences.
