Highly Emissive Perylene Diimide-Based Metallacages and Their Host–Guest Chemistry for Information Encryption

Abstract: Here we report two highly emissive perylene diimide (PDI)-based metallacages and explore their complexation with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as pyrene, triphenylene and perylene. The fluorescence quantum yields of metallacages exceed 90% and their binding constants with perylene can reach as high as 2.41 × 10 4 M -1 in acetonitrile. These features enable further tuning of the emission of the host-guest complexes to obtain white-light emission based on the complementary orange emission of the metalla… Show more

“…Moreover, coronene, which is a stronger guest for the metallacage (for 4a⊃coronene, K a = 2.05 × 10 3 M -1 ; for 4b⊃coronene, K a = 1.95 × 10 3 M -1 ), 27 was used to block the cavity of the metallacage. The yields of DNH upon photooxidation decreased dramatically when 4a ⊃ coronene or 4b ⊃ coronene was used as the photosensitizer (Figure S38).…”

“…[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] This strategy takes the highly directional metal-coordination bonds to prepare SCCs spontaneously and endows the SCCs with high structural and functional diversity. [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] Especially, the preparation of photosensitizers using this method not only avoids their self-aggregation through the formation of geometric structures, but also facilitates the intersystem crossing owing to the introduction of heavy metal atoms, giving high 1 O 2 generation ability and photostability. [29][30][31][32][33][34] Moreover, different buliding blocks capable of generating 1 O 2 can be integrated into a single metallacage.…”

“…The relatively weak interactions between neighboring metallacages result in a crystal packing which is more disordered in the short range. Each unit cell of the 4 a and 4 d crystals contains four and two metallacages, respectively, while a similar perylene diimide‐based metallacage crystal contains only one metallacage in each unit cell [10m] . Although the metallacages possess a three‐dimensional cavity, no good host‐guest interactions was found for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as anthracene and thianthrene (Figure S16).…”

“…43,44 The observed supramolecular interactions may endow 1 capacity for enantioselective recognition of biaryl molecules. 45 Therefore, 1 is selected as a sensor for six enantiomers B1-B6. Chiral sensing experiments were conducted by immersing activated enantiopure 1 into the solution of analytes separately and evaluated by the uorescence of analytes.…”
