Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N8) Virus, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2017

Abstract: In 2017, highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N8) virus was detected in poultry in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Whole-genome phylogeny showed the virus clustered with H5N8 clade 2.3.4.4B strains from birds in central and southern Asia. Emergence of this virus in central Africa represents a threat for animal health and food security.

“…The first detected virus (A/Brown-headed_Gull/Qinghai/ZTO1-LU/2016) had an HPAI virus H5 clade 2.3.4.4b-derived backbone of segments 4, 6, and 8, combined with segments 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 from different Asian low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses ( 24 , 25 ). After May 2016, this reassortant was not detected until May 2017, when it reemerged in domestic ducks in the Democratic Republic of Congo ( 26 ).…”

“…Egypt, Tunisia and Nigeria were the first countries reporting the disease [8][9][10] , followed by Niger, Cameroon and Uganda [11][12][13] . In spring 2017, the virus reached the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) 14 , Zimbabwe and South Africa 11,15 and in February 2019 new cases were reported in Namibia 16 . Currently, Gs/GD HPAI H5Nx poses a substantial threat to the poultry population in several African countries, and distinct clades are co-circulating in West Africa ( 17,18 (Supplementary Fig.…”

“…An HPAI H5N8 subtype virus was reported from ducks and a chicken in 2017. A total of 11 ducks, out of 21 sampled, were found to be positive for the H5 subtype of avian influenza virus using reverse-transcription PCR [170]. This study assumed possible contraction of the disease from wild birds.…”
