Higuchi fractal dimension and spectral entropy as measures of depth of sedation in intensive care unit

Abstract: The ability of two easy-to-calculate nonlinear parameters, the Higuchi fractal dimension (HDf) and spectral entropy, to follow the depth of sedation in the intensive care unit is assessed. For comparison, the relative beta ratio is calculated. The results are evaluated using clinical assessment of the Ramsay score. The results show that the HD/sub f/ discriminates well between Ramsay scores 2-4 while beta ratio is superior for deeper levels of sedation. The value of the HD/sub f/ correlates highly with the cut… Show more

“…Here, we undertake the same analysis as in Vanderlei . Nevertheless, there are other techniques which could be added to the [CFP] such as DFA, Shannon entropy, fractal dimension , correlation dimension , approximate entropy , and sample entropy . There is further evidence that spectral derivatives of correlation dimension, approximate entropy, and sample entropy could be achieved by applying the interpeak algorithms to the Welch power spectra as for spectral entropy and sDFA.…”

“…HFD, calculated from the electroencephalographic signal, has proved to be a sensitive measure of the level of hypnosis. 14,15 A more formal treatment of these measures together with corresponding references and values of algorithm parameters used in the present study are given in the appendix.…”

“…A variety of methods and commercial devices for measuring the depth of anesthesia based on EEG signals have been developed [6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13]. At present, the underlying mechanism of effects of anesthesia agents on the CNS is not well understood.…”
