Hindrances to smart tourism development

Abstract: Purpose Most previous studies have discussed the factors that drive the development of smart tourism or its benefits. Nevertheless, hindrances to smart tourism development have been largely ignored by previous studies. Hence, to bridge the aforementioned research gap, the present study identified the hindrances to smart tourism development in Hong Kong, which has been affected by the recent pandemic, based on the adjusted destination competitiveness conceptual models. “…However, in the post-COVID-19-era, tourism-centric navigation apps can mitigate some concerns by providing real-time crowding data, allowing informed tourists to choose destinations that minimize public health threats while maximizing visitation opportunities. Also, the new cognition developed during the COVID-19 pandemic may lead to greater reliance on smartphone apps (Sun et al , 2022). Therefore, the adoption and adaptation of navigation technologies because of risk awareness, perception and avoidance should be assessed in future research.…”

“…Thus, by integrating advanced ICTs, smart destinations strive to enrich the tourist experience and enhance destination competitiveness (Sustacha et al, 2023). Recent advances in technology, such as 5G/NBIoT/Wi-Fi, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), blockchain, robotics, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), extended reality (ER), the Internet of Things (IoT), the metaverse and ChatGPT, are rapidly turning all tourism resources into smart tourism resources (Sun et al, 2022;Gursoy et al, 2023). The integration of these technologies into a destination infrastructure not only helps destination managers transmute their destinations into smart destinations but also provides them with tools to transform the massive amounts of big data available into value propositions for all destination stakeholders (Chen, 2023).…”

“…The Central Statistical Office of Latvia has begun to collect and analyse mobile data statistics (Van der Steina et al, 2019a). Accordingly, planning and management is important because smart tourism is highly dependent on the integrated software platform supported by technology, various terminals that provide respective services to tourists and the tourism management platform (Sun et al, 2022).…”
