Hippocampal and entorhinal atrophy in mild cognitive impairment

Abstract: Smaller hippocampal and entorhinal cortex volumes each contribute to the prediction of conversion to Alzheimer disease. Age and cognitive variables also contribute to prediction, and the added value of hippocampal and entorhinal cortex volumes is small. Nonetheless, combining these MRI volumes with age and cognitive measures leads to high levels of predictive accuracy that may have potential clinical application.

“…Increased rates of atrophy of medial temporal regions have been associated with decline to AD Buckner et al, 2005;Chetelat et al, 2005;Desikan et al, 2008). Baseline hippocampal measures have also been demonstrated to predict future conversion to AD (Jack et al, 2005;den Heijer et al, 2006;Devanand et al, 2007Devanand et al, , 2008Fleisher et al, 2008;Risacher et al, 2009). …”

“…The majority of experimental studies so far employed manual volumetric techniques to determine volumes of hippocampus, amygdala, entorhinal cortex, and other subregions of medial temporal lobe [12,25,50]. Few studies have employed semi-automated techniques to determine hippocampus volume, accounting for more than 80% of variation in manual measurements [7,21].…”

“…Few studies have employed semi-automated techniques to determine hippocampus volume, accounting for more than 80% of variation in manual measurements [7,21]. Manual hippocampus volume reaches about 70% accuracy [12,26] in the prediction of AD in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an at risk group of AD [32], and between 80 to 90% accuracy in the discrimination between patients with AD and healthy control subjects [17,18]. Levels of accuracy are similar for amygdala volumetry, but less well established in comparison to hippocampus volumetry [50].…”

“…Клетки места и клетки решетки находятся в структурах мозга, которые в первую очередь страдают при болезни Альцгеймера [17,18]. Поэтому у больных болезнью Альцгеймера нарушаются не только процессы запоминания и вспоминания, но и пространственное ориентирование.…”
