Histiocytic sarcoma in 14 miniature schnauzers – a new breed predisposition?

Abstract: Objectives To describe a series of miniature schnauzers diagnosed with histiocytic sarcoma and assess for possible breed predisposition. Materials and Methods Medical records of miniature schnauzers with a diagnosis of histiocytic sarcoma between January 2008 and April 2015 were reviewed. Data collected included signalment, body weight, presenting complaint, date of diagnosis, clinicopathologic and diagnostic imaging findings, treatment, therapeutic response, date of death or last follow-up and necropsy find… Show more

“…was not confirmed in our study, but the suspected predisposition in Shetland Sheepdogs as proposed previously 13 was confirmed. Miniature Schnauzers have been shown to be predisposed to HS in non-CNS cases, 6 and multiple single cases affecting the CNS have been reported. 14,18,19,34,35 Only 2 Miniature Schnauzers were reported in our series, both with disseminated disease, with no defined breed predisposition based on this limited number of cases.…”

“…Several dog breeds are consistently overrepresented in HS case series, and a familial association has been reported in Bernese Mountain Dogs. [3][4][5] Defined breed predisposition data for HS are limited, but Bernese Mountain Dog, Golden Retriever, Flat Coat Retriever, Shar Pei, Miniature Schnauzer, Labrador Retriever, and Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeds have been shown to be overrepresented based on defined control populations, 6,7 and Rottweilers are conspicuously overrepresented in several case series. 1,[8][9][10][11] Histiocytic sarcoma involving the central nervous system (CNS) is relatively uncommon representing 2.2% (n = 2) of primary and 3.4% (n = 7) of secondary intracranial neoplasms diagnosed at necropsy, 12 and prognosis regardless of treatment is anecdotally poor.…”

“…Treatment varied for the nine dogs, and survival times were poor for those receiving chemotherapy alone, with a median of 19 days. However, one dog who received surgery alone was still alive for 1620 days . Radiographically, PHS is more commonly seen in the right middle and left cranial lung lobes and typically occurs in the periphery rather than the midaspect of the lobe.…”

“…Recently, a case series of 14 miniature schnauzers described a similar clinical presentation, in which 10 had localised disease and nine of 10 cases were diagnosed with primary pulmonary HS (Lenz et al . ). The median survival time of dogs receiving chemotherapy was only 19 days, although they received varied treatment protocols.…”
