Histiocytic sarcoma of the parotid gland region

Abstract: Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a malignant neoplasm showing the morphological and immunophenotypic features of mature histiocytes. Reported herein is a case of HS of the parotid gland region. A 53-year-old woman noticed a swelling of the right preauricular area. Preoperative fine needle aspiration cytology showed an admixture of pleomorphic atypical cells and mature lymphocytes. She underwent total parotidectomy. Grossly, the tumor was located at the parotid gland to subcutaneous tissue, and showed infiltrative g… Show more

“…The characteristic kidney-shaped nuclei have also been reported before in canine HS (33,39,46) and in human HS (47) and IDCS (14). Indentations of the nucleus have been reported in the canine literature (1,7,24,26,28) as well as in human HS (41) and IDCS (48), and a combination of indentations, grooves or folds in human HS (43,49), IDCS (14) and LCH (50). This indicates that a canine subtype comparable to human LCH/LCS may also exist.…”

“…In humans, multinucleated giant cells are less frequently present in HS (43), as well as in IDCS (13), FDCS (44) and indeterminate DCS (45), which may imply a more malignant nature of HS in canines. The characteristic kidney-shaped nuclei have also been reported before in canine HS (33,39,46) and in human HS (47) and IDCS (14).…”

“…3 HS most commonly presents in the lymph nodes, bone marrow, intestines, skin, and spleen. 3 Only a few cases of HS presenting in the head and neck region have been described including the, palate 2 , nasal cavity 3 , parotid gland 4 , zygomatic, preauricular region 5 , and forehead. 6 To our knowledge, there are no reports of HS occurring in the orbit of a child.…”

“…3,4 Immunohistochemistry and cytochemistry typically reveal lysozyme positive, vimentin positive, CD4, CD45, CD68, and CD163 positive cells that are negative for other T and B cell markers, langerin, CD1a, myeloperoxidase, and epithelial markers. Focal S100 positivity has been noted in some studies.…”
