“…We have simply selected sudanophilia, autofluorescence, acid-fastness and positiveness to PAS and PAS-D because we consider that, for practical identification purposes, these are the most consistent properties of lipofuscin and of a variety of ceroid pigments. Although the lipid inextractability from cardiac and neuronal lipofuscin granules in situ observed in this study appears in line with numerous previous studies (Hodge 1894;Strehler 1964;Wolman 1964;Lillie 1965;Clara 1965;Gedigk and Pioch 1965;Nishioka et al 1968;Porta and Hartroft 1969), a partial attenuation of the osmiophilia and/or sudanophilia after treatment with diverse lipid solvents has been also reported (Rosin 1896;Mfihlmann 1901;Stammler 1959;Nandy 1971). The PAS reactivity of lipofuscin in situ, which was immutable to the extractive procedure used in this study and in a previous one (Elleder 1989), was found attenuated or even abolished by other investigators using similiar or different solvents (Hall et al 1989;Stammler 1959).…”
