The development of the glandular stomach was studied using light, electron, and fluorescent microscopy. The research used 130 Japanese quail eggs from the second to the seventeenth days of incubation.The proventriculus could be distinguished on the3rd day. Its wall consisted of four tunics: tunica mucosa, very thin tunica submucosa, tunica muscularis, and outermost tunica serosa. Mucosal folds appeared on the 8th day. The luminal epithelium was pseudostratified columnar in type and transformed into simple columnar by the 10th day. The mucosal papillae emerged on the 11th day, spiraled on the 15th day, and had a distinct whorled look by the 17th day. Two types of proventricular glands were recognized: compound tubuloalveolar and simple tubular glands. Both types were situated within the tunica mucosa. On the 4th day, the compound glands emerged as evaginations of the lining epithelium. It began to branch on the 8th day and became well established by the 11th day. The simple glands appeared on the 11th day as localized down-growths of the luminal epithelium forming solid cords. On the 15th day, many of them showed complete canalization. On the 8th day, the muscular coat was differentiated into the lamina muscularis mucosae and tunica muscularis.

Fresh pullet eggs (White Leghorn strain) were incubated from 11 to 21 days. Embryos were killed by decapitation and portions of the esophagus, crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, caecum and rectum were dissected and removed rapidly. The inner lining of the gut was exposed by using small needles to pin the cut edges of the tube to a wax plate immersed in Hank's fixative modified with aldehydes (Litke and Low, '77). Preparation for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was routine.Esophageal cilia appeared in tufts along with microvilli and microplicae. These were more frequent a t the lower end of the esophagus. Developing cilia were present. In the 12-day proventriculus, structures resembling macrovilli were predominant. These disappeared by the seventeenth day, when aggregates of rounded cells covered with microvilli appeared. The gizzard acquired a prominent rounded cellular appearance with microvilli a t 17 days. These cells increasingly elongated and flattened out towards hatching (21 days). Observations of the duodenum confirmed those made by Grey ('72). A hexagonal pattern of cells was also observed. The ridges of the ileal portion of the small intestine were larger and fuller than in the duodenum. Formation of rectal villi was not as well organized as in the small intestine. Villi could be seen scattered a t random a t 12 days. By 17 days, definitive ridges were seen. The villi in the cloaca1 region of the rectal area were extremely long and elaborate, as previously reported by Zeitschmann ('02, cited by Calhoun, '57). Our observations show that the mucosal surfaces become highly specialized in different parts of the tract during development. Marked changes in geometric form occur during development.

Development of esophageal epithelium in the fetal and neonatal mouse

Development of the fetal mouse esophageal epithelium was followed using light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and radioautography. At 15 days of gestation in the cervical (C), mediastinal (M), and abdominal (A) segments of the esophagus, the epithelium was two or three cells thick, and only cells located in the basal (germinal) layer incorporated tritiated thymidine. Ciliated cells were sparse in all three segments. At 17 days of gestation, longitudinal mesenchymal ridges became more differentiated in the distal segment. Labeling indices were lower than at preceding stages in each segment. Ciliated cells had increased in number and appeared to be evenly distributed along the whole esophagus. In periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-stained sections, an increasing proximodistal distribution of glycogen stores was observed, with greatest concentrations found in segment A. At 18 days of gestation, labeling indices were comparable in segments C and M (11.7% +/- 2.9% and 12.8% +/- 1.9%, respectively) but remained higher in segment A (17.9% +/- 2.0%). Ciliated cells were still present. At this stage, transverse circular furrows and ridges started to appear. They increased in number at 4 days after birth and were very closely distributed in the adult. In longitudinal sections, these ridges corresponded to projections of stratum granulosum and of the overlying stratum corneum. After birth, ciliated cells desquamated rapidly but some patches were still present at 4 days. At 8 days, the esophageal epithelium was not yet keratinized.
