Histological effect of Artichoke leaf extract on bone healing in rats

Abstract: Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of artichoke leaves extract on bone healing. Methods: A total of 30 rabbits were used in the current study, 60 bone defects were made, divided into 30  bone defects left without treatment and an other 30 bone defects were treated with 0.5ml of Artichocke oil. Each group was divided randomly into three period intervals (1week, 2 and 5 weeks). “…Bone marrow and trabecular area were expressed in µm 2 , while the newly formed bone area was expressed as a percentage of the measured tissue area (1.45 mm 2 ) according to the following equation: newly formed bone area = measured bone area/measured tissue area (×100) [ 17 ] , using Image J software. Osteoblast and osteocyte counts were determined by considering the mean numbers in the bone tissue with dimensions of 1.41 × 1.05 mm located in the first three threads of the implant, under ×40 magnification [ 18 , 19 ] . For the immunohistochemical demonstration of IGF-I, a polyclonal primary antibody (Abcam, UK) was employed.…”

“…The animals were divided into two groups according to the time of scarification as follows; 2 and 6 weeks after the implantation (6 rabbits will be sacrificed for each group). First, General anesthesia was induced by intramuscular injection of ketamine hydrochloride with a dose of (1 ml/kg of body weight) plus xylazine (10) . Pure Titanium (cpTi) implants are placed on each rabbit's left and right side of the femur.…”
