The nasal septal body (NSB) is a widened region of anterior nasal septum which is located superior to the inferior, and anterior to the middle turbinate. It consists of mucosa and a marked soft tissue overlying the cartilage and bone. Both cartilage and mucosa is thicker here compared to the other parts of the nasal septum. NSB plays an important role in the regulation of nasal airflow. Because it contains venous sinusoids, it is also called the septal turbinate. Despite of its important role in the regulation of nasal airflow, it is often ignored and may be confused with a high nasal septal deviation. In published studies, NSB has been mainly investigated histologically. Although there are a limited number of histological and anatomical studies related to NSB, to our best knowledge there are no study on radiological examination of NSB size in patients with allergic rhinitis. Here, our aim was to determine whether there is any radiologically detected effect of allergic rhinitis on NSB size. Yöntem: Daha önce alerjik rinit tan›s› konmufl 40 hasta ve alerjik riniti olmayan randomize yöntemle seçilmifl otuz kontrol dene¤i bu çal›fl-maya dahil edildi. Koronal düzlem paranazal sinüs BT'sinde nazal septal cisim (NSC) boyutlar› ölçüldü. Nazal cerrahi geçirmifl hastalar, nazal polipleri olanlar, halen topikal nazal sprey, oral antihistaminik, oral steroid ve oral lökotriyen kullananlar çal›flmaya al›nmad›. Bulgular: NSC'nin ortalama kal›nl›¤›n›n alerjik rinitli hastalarda 11.2 mm, alerjik riniti olmayanlarda 10.74 mm oldu¤u saptand›. Koronal düzlemde paranazal sinüs BT incelemesinde NSC'nin büyüklü¤ü aç›-s›ndan alerjik riniti olan ve olmayanlar aras›nda anlaml› farkl›l›k yoktu.Sonuç: Sonuçlar›m›z önceki çal›flmalar›n bulgular›n› desteklememifltir. Methods:Forty patients previously diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, and randomly selected thirty controls without allergic rhinitis were included in this study. Measurements of NSB size were performed in coronal plane paranasal sinus CT. Patients who had undergone nasal surgery, those with nasal polyposis, patients still using topical nasal spray, oral antihistamines, oral steroids and oral leukotrienes were excluded from the study. Results:The average width of NSB was found 11.2 mm in patients with allergic rhinitis and 10.74 mm in patients without allergic. There was no significant difference between patients with and without allergic rhinitis in terms of NSB size on coronal plane paranasal sinus CT examination. Bu çalışmada alerjik rinit (AR) ve diğer sinonazal patolojileri olan ve olmayan hastalarda nazal septal cisim genişliğinin (NSC) araştırılması ve karşılaştırılması amaçlandı. Hastalar ve Yöntemler: Çalışmaya toplam 577 birey dahil edildi. Çalışma grupları, çeşitli sinonazal patolojileri ve/veya AR'si olan 488 erişkin hastadan, kontrol grubu ise paranazal radyografik bulguları ve alerji testleri tamamen normal olan 89 sağlıklı bireyden oluşuyordu. Çalışma grubundaki hastalar kendi içinde dört gruba ayrılarak incelendi; grup 1 sadece sinonazal patolojisi olan hastalar (septum deviyasyonu, akut sinüzit, kronik sinüzit ve/veya nazal polipozis), grup 2 hem sinonazal patolojileri hem de AR'si olan hastalar, grup 3 sadece AR tanılı hastalardan oluşturuldu, grup 4 ise kontrol grubu olarak tasarlandı. Bulgular: Grup 1'de 201 (%34.8) hasta, grup 2'de 211 (%36.6) hasta, grup 3'de 76 (%13.2) hasta ve grup 4'de ise 89 sağlıklı birey (%15.4) mevcuttu. Bunlardan 299'u (%51.8) kadın, 278'i (%48.2) erkekti. NSC erkeklerde kadınlardan anlamlı olarak daha büyüktü. Ortalama NSC genişliği 1.2±0.2 idi. NSC boyutları her üç çalışma grubunda da kontrollere kıyasla anlamlı olarak daha büyüktü (p<0.001). Sonuç: Çalışmamız, literatür ile uyumlu olarak NSC'nin AR ve sinus patolojilerinde benzer oranlarda büyüdüğünü desteklemektedir. Burun tıkanıklığı ile başvuran hastalarda, fizik muayeneye ek olarak paranazal sinüs tomografisi ile değerlendirme etkin tanı ve tedavi için büyük öneme sahiptir.

The nasal swell body (NSB) is considered to be an enlarged region of the nasal septum, which is located superiorly to the inferior nasal turbinate and anteriorly to the middle nasal turbinate, with a potential effect upon the airflow nasal valve. The histological studies of the NSB demonstrated that it is a glandular formation, not a venous structure, and it is formed by septal cartilage and bone, as well as a thick mucosa. Recent studies emphasized the functional role of the nasal swell body and it is thought to interfere with the nasal airflow and air humidification, due to its proximity to the internal nasal valve and its histological characteristics (venous sinusoids and seromucinous glands). The nasal swell body is strongly related to the presence of rhinosinusal chronic inflammations (allergic rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis) and the septal deviation. In case of the presence of the nasal swell body, surgical treatment is not commonly done, due to the absence of a consensus between the ENT practitioners. Most of them consider surgery as being too aggressive because of the presence of seromucinous glands, with slight impact upon the nasal obstruction. Most probably, the lack of consensus is determined by inconsistent anatomical and histological study results.
