Histological Study on Mast Cells in Conjunctiva of NC/Nga Mice

Abstract: An increase in mast cell density with age indicates that NC/Nga mice develop atopic keratoconjunctivitis-like signs. Dexamethasone ointment has a suppressive effect on the increase in mast cell density.

“…Rodent models of allergic conjunctivitis display no change in these cells 21,22 and NC/Nga mice with spontaneous atopic dermatitis manifest an increase in goblet cell density. 23 There have been no rodent models showing the spontaneous loss of goblet cells in their conjunctiva as observed in IB Ϫ/Ϫ mice. Of note, the reduction of goblet cells followed the infiltration of inflammatory cells.…”

“…These findings were similar to those reported by another group. 25 However, histopathologic changes of the cornea in AD mice were not studied previously. We found that AD mice had thinning of the corneal epithelium, an irregular interface between epithelium and stroma, invasion of fibroblastic keratocytes into the epithelium, subepithelial deposition of materials, deformity of keratocytes, disorganized collagen fibers, and neovascularization in the stroma.…”

“…Each thin‐section of skin was stained with toluidine blue and photographed under a light microscope. The cell counts of 20 thin‐sections from each specimen were averaged to obtain mast cell density per square millimetre (Inada et al ., ).…”
