Histology of corpuscles of Stannius in Lake Van fish (Alburnus tarichi Güldenstädt, 1814) (Cyprinidae)

Abstract: In the present study, the location, histology and number of corpuscles of Stannius (Sc), which are endocrine glands associated with the kidneys of teleost fish, were investigated for the first time in Lake Van fish (Alburnus tarichi), an anadromous and endemic inhabiting Turkey's Lake Van Basin. The Sc, which were ovoid or spheroid and white or cream in colour, were found to vary in number between three and five among the examined fish. The glands were located in the caudal part of the kidney, and either parti… Show more

“…The morphological and histological appearance of the CS is consistent with the observations described in our previous study (Kaptaner et al, 2021) that 3 to 5 glands are located ventro‐ or dorso‐caudal surface of the kidney and each of which is encapsulated by a connective tissue capsule that divides the gland into incomplete lobules and glandular parenchyma consists of two types of cell type, namely type‐I and type‐II cells based on their sizes and staining patterns with conventional histological stains.…”

“…As previously described, two distinct gland cells are present in the CS of the female Lake Van fish (Kaptaner et al, 2021). PAS staining was weak to moderate in the cytoplasms of predominant type‐I cells.…”

“…The kidney of Lake Van fish consisted of two lobes that were attached dorsally to the wall of the thoracoabdominal cavity and divided into three parts: the head, trunk and tail, as described by Kaptaner (2017) and Kaptaner et al. (2021). It was covered by a mesothelium composed of single squamous cells (Figure 5a).…”
