“…Bourgeois nest males in our study indeed had significantly higher levels of free 11-KT than plastic sneaker males, which may be associated with the clear differences in social dominance and reproductive activities between these male types, as shown in a previous study (von Kuerthy and Taborsky, 2016). This pattern of elevated free 11-KT levels in bourgeois nest males compared with opportunistic sneaker males is consistent with results from previous studies of teleosts with ARTs, such as the bluegill sunfish (Kindler et al, 1989;Knapp and Neff, 2007), peacock blenny (Oliveira et al, 2001b), Azorean rock-pool blenny (Oliveira et al, 2001c), and saddleback wrasse (Hourigan et al, 1991). We would expect that previous sneaker males in L. callipterus that have switched from sneaker to nest male status exhibit similar free 11-KT levels as the nest males studied here, because the sneaker male tactic is a transient stage leading to the final bourgeois phase provided that individuals survive to this stage.…”

“…Individuals of this species mature initially as either males or females. Under appropriate social conditions, initial phase (IP) males and females become terminal phase (TP) males (Hourigan et al 1991;Kuwamura et al 2000). Ovaries of the female, which initially have no detectable testicular tissue, are restructured into fully functional testes during sex change (Hourigan et al 1991).…”

“…The onset of sex change is characterized by a rapid decline in GSI and low serum E2 levels (Nakamura et al ., 1989). As these parameters may also vary with the ovarian cycle and season (Hourigan et al ., 1991;Hoffman, 1987), gonadal histology was utilized to confirm the progression of sex change. Based on all criteria, the predicted sex changer from the small TP male treatment had no evidence indicating sex change.…”

“…In addition to several changes in behavioral and secondary sexual characteristics, the gonad is significantly restructured. The testes of IP males become significantly smaller with numerous, large Leydig cells (Hourigan et al ., 1991). Ovaries, which have no detectable testicular tissue prior to sex change, develop into fully functional testes.…”
