Histomorphology of the Stomach, Proventriculus and Ventriculus of the Red Jungle Fowl

Abstract: The cranial chamber (proventriculus) and caudal chamber (ventriculus) of the stomach of the Red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus spadiceus) were examined by means of light microscopy. Both chambers presented folds of the tunica mucosa lined by a simple prismatic epithelium that was positive for neutral mucin. Simple tubular glands occupied the lamina propria of both chambers; in the ventriculus of older birds, they showed a coiled base. These ventricular glands were lined by simple cuboidal cells represented by the … Show more

“…The adventitia was serosa, and was composed of epithelial cells and connective tissue (Fig.1B). The morphological characteristics of the proventriculus have been studied in different animals (Fang, 2005;He, 2002;Sun, 2012;Shen, 2000;Kadhim, 2011;Li, 2006;Zhang et al, 2016 ). The findings of the present study indicate that the muscularis mucosae of proventriculus in the African ostrich was clearly observed, it was the same with Cygnus.…”

“…It can be concluded that animals with The simple tubular glands of the African ostrich are located in the lamina propria, while the compound tubular glands are located in the submucosa. However, Kadhim (2011) revealed that the simple tubular glands of the Red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus spadiceus) occupied the lamina propria, while the compound tubular glands were situated between the inner and outer layers of the lamina muscularis mucosae, previous studies also have shown that the compound tubular glands of Pavo muticus (He, 2002), Balearica. pavonina(shen, 2000), Cygnus cygnus (Sun, 2012), Rhinolophus ferrumequinum and Phasianus colchicus (Li, 2006) are located deep in the lamina propria.…”

“…Microscopic examination of the cystic structure in the present case did not reveal any parasitic cyst or neoplastic growths; showing that our presumptive diagnosis of cystic tumor or parasitic cyst was incorrect. Histologic identification of the mucosal lining of the cystic structure showed identical findings to the histologic description of proventriculus in a previous study (8). Gastric duplication may be tubular or cystic, with the cystic form seen in this case being more frequent (7).…”

“…A large body of knowledge the morphology of the alimentary tract in birds has been conducted on many big type birds, especially on fowl (Martínez et al, 2000;Rossi et al, 2005;Selvan et al, 2008;Ma, 2009;Kadhim et al, 2011), but no studies were reported on the morphology of the digestive tract of birds in the family Laniidae. Grey-backed shrike (Lanius tephronotus) is a middle-sized bird frequently seen in East Asia (Mackinnon & Phillipps, 2000).…”
