Histopathological and molecular profiling of lung adenocarcinoma skin metastases reveals specific features

Abstract: Aims Little is known regarding the histopathological and molecular features of lung adenocarcinoma skin metastases. Our study is the largest, to our knowledge, to comprehensively explore these to date. Methods and results We performed a retrospective cohort study analysing 42 lung adenocarcinoma skin metastasis samples obtained from a database of 2659 lung adenocarcinomas collected between 2010 and 2020. EGFR exon 19 deletion was detected in one patient and KRAS mutations were detected in 12 (33.3%) patients. … Show more

“…In these cases, a broad IHC panel and the correlation with radiological findings are necessary (Table 5A). In a recent study, about 70% of the skin metastases of lung adenocarcinomas were negative for TTF1, which might be due to the frequent poorly differentiated nature of the adenocarcinoma in skin metastases 30 …”

“…In a recent study, about 70% of the skin metastases of lung adenocarcinomas were negative for TTF1, which might be due to the frequent poorly differentiated nature of the adenocarcinoma in skin metastases. 30 The distinction between primary skin adnexal carcinoma and metastatic adenocarcinoma, especially breast and salivary gland, can be challenging because these tumours can exhibit similar morphological patterns and immunohistochemical profiles. 28,31 Depending on the tumour type, several IHC panels are recommended (Table 5B).…”

“…Molecular testing was performed as previously described [ 4 , 13 ]. EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) mutations were screened using a peptic nucleic acid (PNA) clamp detection kit (Entrogen detection kit, Entrogen Inc., Woddland Hill, CA, USA) or via next-generation sequencing (NGS) on the Personal Genome Machine (Thermofisher, Dardilly, France).…”
