Histopathological survey of the mussel Mytilus chilensis (Mytilidae) and the clam Gari solida (Psammobiidae) from southern Chile

Abstract: ABSTRACT.A total of 175 specimens of mussels, Mytilus chilensis (Mytilidae), and 56 specimens of clams, Gari solida (Psammobiidae), were collected in natural beds and culture sites of southern Chile. Juvenile mussel specimens (3 cm of maximum length) were free of parasites and diseases, whilst the commercial sized populations was parasitized by intracellular inclusions of bacteria-like organisms in the digestive gland epithelium and in the gills, by ciliates in the gills, turbellarians similar to Paravortex (R… Show more

“…The DN prevalence in this Gaydamak Bay population (4.0%) was probably underestimated, being based on flow cytometry, which is not very sensitive at the early stages of the disease 19,22 . Still, our estimate of DN level in the population from the Gaydamak Bay is close to the mean prevalence reported for Mytilus populations worldwide 39,[67][68][69][70] and much lower than the maximal prevalence of 56% reported for M. trossulus population from British Columbia 71 .…”

“…Disseminated neoplasia (DN) has been previously observed in four of this species around the world: M. trossulus (Rasmussen 1986, Sunila 1987, Moore et al 1991, Elston et al 1992, Usheva and Frolova 2000, Vassilenko and Baldwin 2014, M. chilensis (Campalans et al 1998, Cremonte et al 2015, Lohrmann et al 2019, M. edulis (Farley 1969, Lowe and Moore 1978, Green and Alderman 1983, Elston et al 1988, Galimany and Sunila 2008 and M.…”

“…M. chilensis mussels are found along the western coast of South America, and disseminated neoplasia has been reported in multiple populations in Chile and Argentina since 1998 (Lohrmann et al, 2019; Cremonte et al, 2015; Campalans et al, 1998; Cremonte et al, 2011). Prevalence has varied by location, ranging from undetectable in some populations to as high as 12% in the Castro region of Chile and 13% in the Beagle Channel in southern Argentina, although no notable mass mortality events have been associated with neoplasia in these populations.…”
