Histopathology and other aspects of echinostome infection in freshwater fishes of the South Western Ghats, India

Abstract: While investigating the trematode parasite infestation in the freshwater fishes of South Western Ghats, India we came across echinostome infection in three species of fishes Pseudosphromenus cupanus, Lepidocephalichthys thermlis and Aplochelus lineatus. Detailed histopathological studies on the infected kidney of the freshwater fish L. thermlis revealed severe damage and degeneration of their cells. The prevalence, intensity and mean abundance of infection of Echinostoma sp. in the three fishes were also recor… Show more

“…Heavy necrosis, damage to infected tissues, particularly muscle, and infiltration of immune cells at the site of infection were recorded, which could be attributed to the clinostomatids' destructive suckers and their secreted proteases. These findings are consistent with Eiras et al, 1999;Jithila & Prasadan, 2019;Montes et al, 2020;Shareef & Abidi, 2012.…”

“…Infected liver, spleen, and intestine tissues were properly washed with water before being stored in buffered Formalin for around 24 h for histological examinations. Following thorough washing, the specimens were dehydrated in a succession of Ethyl Alcohols (50, 70, 90, and 100%) and Acetone before being cleared in Methyl Benzoate ( 16 ). After dehydration in a graded ethanol series, samples were embedded in paraffin.…”

“…Tissues from the liver, spleen, and intestine that had been infected with metacercaria were thoroughly cleaned with water before being preserved in buffered formalin for around 24 hours for histological analysis. The specimens were thoroughly cleaned, then dehydrated in a series of ethyl alcohols (50, 70, 90, and 100%) and acetone before being cleaned with methyl benzoate (Jithila and Prasadan, 2019). Samples were dehydrated in a graded ethanol series, and then they were paraffin-embedded.…”
