Histopathology of important fungal infections – A summary

Abstract: Fungal infections due to pathogenic or opportunistic fungi may be superficial, cutaneous, subcutaneous and systemic. With the upsurge of at risk population systemic fungal infections are increasingly common. Diagnosis of fungal infections may include several modalities including histopathology of affected tissue which reveal the morphology of fungi and tissue reaction.  Fungi can be in yeast and / or hyphae forms and tissue reactions may range from minimal to acute or chronic granulomatous inflammation. Differ… Show more

“… 27 The success rates in the management of mucormycosis have ranged between 20% and 70% depending on the time lapse from presentation to diagnosis, the aggressive nature of the disease, and the immunocompromised state of the affected patients. A biopsy of sample from clinically affected sites and demonstration of hyphae by direct microscopy are crucial for diagnosis 13 , 28 , 29 and to define and re-evaluate the treatment response. The presence of viable tissue along with necrotic tissue will confirm that a good debridement was performed.…”

“…In large specimens, grossing and biting may not be representative, or organisms may be present in the deeper plane and could have been identified on viewing deeper sections. Tissue reactions can be considered a soft sign to suspect fungal infections such as necrosis, histiocytes and lymphocytes, eosinophil aggregates, giant cells, and sometimes neutrophil clumps [ 11 ]. Tissue response is variable and based on allergic, acute, or chronic infection [ 10 ].…”

“…Histopathologic examinations are often specific enough to yield an accurate diagnosis on which treatment can be based. 6 However, microbial cultures of aspergillosis are necessary for confirming the diagnosis and determining the species. 7 In this case report, the diagnosis was determined by histopathological examination using special staining with PAS, GMS, and ZN.…”
