Histopathology of spontaneous periodontitis in dogs

Abstract: Histological characteristics of the normal dog periodontium and of spontaneous periodontitis were studied in a necropsy material of 12 dogs of various breeds and ages. The material was selected on the basis of radiographical findings. The histological features of radiographically normal and diseased periodontium were found to be similar to those in humans. Progressive periodontal disease was characterized by dense subepithelial inflammatory infiltrates consisting predominantly of plasma cells intermingled with… Show more

“…12,43 In the present study, the sequential dental radiographs confirmed previously reported changes secondary to periodontal disease. These findings are in agreement with the findings of previous studies, 44,45,47,48 although other studies contradict any association. 45 The early furcation involvement in dogs compared with humans may be related to the proximity of the gingival sulcus to the furcation.…”

“…45 The early furcation involvement in dogs compared with humans may be related to the proximity of the gingival sulcus to the furcation. 33,36,44,46,47,51 Histometric analyses and histopathology reported in this study were similar to results reported in Beagle dogs in other studies. These findings are in agreement with the findings of previous studies, 44,45,47,48 although other studies contradict any association.…”

“…In the connective tissue, the dense cellular infiltrate consists mainly of plasma cells and lymphocytes. The osteoclastic resorption of alveolar bone may result in deep, narrow lesions extending vertically around a single root leaving the interdental space intact [38, 39]. The bone defect can involve the furcation areas of premolar and molar teeth.…”

“…This model has been used to study the prevalence, severity and aetiological factors of PD (e.g. Gad, 1968;Sorensen et al, 1980); the clinical, histological and histopathological features associated with the disease (Lindhe et al, 1975;Hamp and Lindberg, 1977;Berglundh et al, 1991); analyze the efficiency of new therapeutic protocols (Jansen and Pilot, 1981;Haney et al, 1995); evaluate the regenerative potential of periodontal tissues (e.g. Iwata et al, 2009;Kwon et al, 2010) and utilized in comparative studies on the inflammatory response associated with the pathogenesis of the disease in dog an human (Skaleric et al, 1997;Papadimitriou et al, 2006).…”
