Histopathology of the Hepatopancreas of Pacific White Shrimp, Penaeus vannamei from None Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) Shrimp Ponds

Abstract: Hepatopancreas study of Pacific White shrimp, Penaeus vannamei was done on the shrimp samples from a commercial shrimp farm in Setiu, Terengganu. About six individual shrimps were collected randomly from eight different shrimp grow-out ponds for histopathology analysis at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu laboratory. Most of the hepatopancreas samples appeared to be healthy, however in the histopathology results showed signs of unhealthy hepatopancreas conditions including slough hepatopancreas tubules cells (SHP… Show more

“…The gills of crustaceans are the main organ for ammonia excretion, whereas the hepatopancreas is an important detoxification and metabolic organ that is very sensitive to water-borne pollutants. The hepatopancreas is one of the indicators in shrimp that can be used to identify the condition of the animal the (Manan et al, 2015). Although there are many detoxification strategies in crustaceans, we observed severe damage of hepatopancreas in the high ammonia-N concentration group.…”

“…did not influence these parameters. The hepatopancreas is an important indicator of shrimp health because it is extremely sensitive to different diets and water pollutants, and can be observed directly under a microscope (Manan, Zhong, Othman, & Ikhwanuddin, 2015). In this study, by means of fresh examination, it was possible to determine that the animals in the treatments with the addition of microalgae (BFT 2.5N, BFT 5N and BFT 10N) had hepatopancreas with tubules full of lipid droplets and without significant lesions, as well as a filled intestine, revealing the positive effect of the inclusion of Navicula sp.…”

“…In the present study, the hepatopancreas status of P. vannamei PL wet samples was observed daily under light microscopy. The brown coloration observed of the hepatopancreas was an indication of good health parameters [ 7 ].…”

“…Little information on the histological effects of HUFA in the hepatopancreas of P. vannamei PL during the early stages has been reported, even though it is one of the indicators of the shrimp's health status [ 7 , 59 ]. In the present study, the hepatopancreas of PL fed with enriched Artemia with both experimental emulsions (TA and TB) seemed healthy and well structured, with a large number of well-developed B cells, dilated tubule, and a reduction in degradation tissue.…”
