Historical Arable Land Change in an Eco-Fragile Area: A Case Study in Zhenlai County, Northeastern China

Abstract: Long-term land changes are cumulatively a major driver of global environmental change. Historical land-cover/use change is important for assessing present landscape conditions and researching ecological environment issues, especially in eco-fragile areas. Arable land is one of the land types influenced by human agricultural activity, reflecting human effects on land-use and land-cover change. This paper selected Zhenlai County, which is part of the farming–pastoral zone of northern China, as the research regio… Show more

“…Landscape models have been recently used for supporting spatial land use decisions [64], environmental modeling [65,66], cultural value assessments [67], and integrated value assessments [68]. The topic of transformation of peri-urban zones and changes in agricultural landscape is being researched in many fields [69][70][71][72].…”

“…Agricultural landscape stands for the spatial distribution of cultivated land, influencing the stability, vulnerability and productivity of cultivated land [19][20][21]. Assessing the historical landscape change and its related land-use changes is necessary for understanding the agricultural evolution processes and its ecological, environmental and water resource effects [21][22][23][24]. As an important type of cropland, paddy field serves over half of the world's population with approximately 15% of the world's cropland [6].…”

“…LULC research has become a global research hotspot [23]. From the analysis of LULC spatial-temporal patterns [24][25][26] and explorations of LULC change driving mechanisms [27,28], the research has evolved to focus on the impact on ecosystem services [29,30], future LULC simulation studies [31][32][33][34], and more detailed analyses of human activities, policies, and other LULC driving mechanisms [35]. In terms of research scale, there have been numerous studies at global, continental, and transnational levels.…”
