Historical Comparison Re-considered

Abstract: Comparative analysis is a mode of research, that due to its outstanding merits is widely used within many fields of scientific inquiry. Focusing on its application in historical research, this article aims to contribute to a more systematic discussion of some of the methodological strategies associated with this mode of analysis. For this purpose, this article presents first a few typologies regarding the functions and leverages of comparative analysis. In the next step different styles in which comparative me… Show more

“…Regarding our research method, we conducted a comparative analysis [38] of the two above-described versions of the book on a chapter-by-chapter basis within a historiography perspective, defined as "the writing of history based on the critical examination of sources, the selection of particular details from the authentic materials in those sources, and the synthesis of those details into a narrative that stands the test of critical examination" [39]. However, we did not limit our work to the description of differences but tried to extract insights about causal relationships within the framework of what May defined as a theorydevelopment view [40] (p. 157) and what Tilly called the universalizing comparison [41] (p. 97).…”

“…The research approach of this study is based on the principles of comparison as a scientific method in which two or more cases are explicitly contrasted with one another regarding a specific phenomenon. The purpose of this method is to identify and explain similarities and differences between a few cases and, to a lesser extent, establish analytical relationships between variables, which is typically sought in quantitative studies of multiple cases (Leiphart, 1975;Azarian, 2011) The ). The countries were selected on the basis of two considerations: the desire to have participating countries from different types of welfare state in Europe, and that in each country there were researchers who are conducting research into sports clubs.…”

“…In order to better see the implicit and taken-for-granted aspects of the social practices in the data material, I structured my reflections on the empirical material by employing contrastivecomparative strategies (Azarian & Petrusenko, 2011;Kocka, 1996). These strategies do not mean systematically comparing two (or more) sets of different contexts, searching for similarities and differences, but rather a process of sensitizing, taking into consideration social actions and events belonging to other contexts in order reflect upon and spot the particularities of the researched setting (Azarian & Petrusenko, 2011, p. 39).…”
