Historical development of the survivorship of zoo rhinoceroses—A comparative historical analysis

Abstract: Zoo animal husbandry is a skill that should be developing constantly. In theory, this should lead to an improvement of zoo animal survivorship over time. Additionally, it has been suggested that species that are at a comparatively higher risk of extinction in their natural habitats (in situ) might also be more difficult to keep under zoo conditions (ex situ). Here, we assessed these questions for three zoo‐managed rhinoceros species with different extinction risk status allocated by the IUCN: the “critically e… Show more

“…(iii) Additionally, a hallmark of the skill of animal husbandry is that zoos have improved the survivorship of the animals in their care over the decades and centuries (Havercamp et al, 2019;Jaakkola & Willis, 2019;Jett & Ventre, 2015;Roller et al, 2021;Scherer et al, 2022;Wich et al, 2009;Wittwer et al, 2023). This leads to the third prediction that, assuming a consistent standard of diagnostics and scrutiny of animal collections, the prevalence of cancer in zoo animals should be increasing over historical time.…”
