Abstract: In the deep-sea, abundant and diverse biological communities tend to occur in areas where combinations of geological, physical and biological processes locally enhance trophic-wide productivity, sustaining aggregations of consumers and top predators. These areas are ‘productivity hotspots’ and their delimitation should improve the effectiveness of area-based strategies designed to manage human activities and protect the deep-sea.
