History and Present Scope of Field Studies on Macaca fuscata yakui at Yakushima Island, Japan

Abstract: Field studies on Japanese macaques on Yakushima Island started in the mid-1970s, >25 yr after the emergence of Japanese primatology, in response to criticism of methods using provisioning and the desire to find the socioecological factors influencing the social life of macaques in natural habitats. We habituated macaques without provisioning mainly in the coastal warm-temperate forest and found that they lived in small troops with a high socionomic sex ratio. Observations of several troop fissions and troop ta… Show more

“…Crop-raiding by Japanese macaques M. fuscata has been studied since the 1960s (e.g. Sprague & Iwasak 2006, Agetsuma 2007, Yamagiwa 2008, Nakagawa et al 2010, Yamada & Muroyama 2010. While the number of detailed studies of crop-raiding macaques in other parts of Asia is on the increase (e.g.…”

“…Yakushima exhibits clear altitudinal gradation in habitat types, which results in variation in macaque diet, population density, and strength of feeding competition (Yoshihiro et al 1999;Hanya et al 2004Hanya et al , 2008, although genetic diversity of the macaques is low (Hayaishi and Kawamoto 2006). Beginning in the mid-1970s, many studies have been conducted in coastal, subtropical, warm-temperate areas, but since the late 1990s, studies have also been conducted in highland, cool-temperate areas (e.g., Yamagiwa 2008). Our census team has focused on the population dynamics of Japanese macaques using a point census method (Hanya et al 2005(Hanya et al , 2008.…”

“…Mito) and focused attention on many fundamental aspects of macaque behavior such as the matrilineal dominance rank system and behavioral variability and cultural traits like potato washing. Later, just as Mori Sosen wanted to draw naturalistic monkeys, a new generation of primatologists sought out fi eld sites to study Japanese monkeys in entirely natural habitats, further enriching the body of scienti fi c literature on Japanese macaques (Yamagiwa 2010b ) .…”
