History in health and health services: exploring the possibilities

Abstract: Historical skills--especially the methodologies involved in interpreting a wide range of sources--can provide a useful analysis of the structure and function of health services, and be used as a means of improving public understanding of the expectations and experiences of health and health care. This paper discusses some key examples of different strategies used by historians to show how they can collaborate effectively with health professionals.
