The incidence of hospital-acquired infections is to a large extent due to device-associated infections. Bacterial attachment and biofilm formation on surfaces of medical devices often act as seeding points of infection. To prevent such infections, coatings based on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are often applied, however with varying clinical success. Here, the traditional AgNP-based antibacterial technology is reimagined, now forming the base for an electroenhanced antimicrobial coating. To integrate AgNPs in an electrically conducting polymer layer, a simple, yet effective chemical strategy based on poly(hydroxymethyl 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT-MeOH:PSS) and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane is designed. The resultant PEDOT-MeOH:PSS-AgNP composite presents a consistent coating of covalently linked AgNPs, as shown by scanning electron microscopy and surface plasmon resonance analysis. The efficacy of the coatings, with and without electrical addressing, is then tested against Staphylococcus aureus, a major colonizer of medical implants. Using custom-designed culturing devices, a nearly complete prevention of biofilm growth is obtained in AgNP composite devices addressed with a square wave voltage input. It is concluded that this electroenhancement of the bactericidal effect of the coupled AgNPs offers a novel, efficient solution against biofilm colonization of medical implants.

We present a study on the photoluminescence (PL) of thin films of poly-(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), non-stretched and uniaxially stretched. The experimental study was carried out using linear polarized light as the excitation beam, oriented either parallel or perpendicular to the stretch axis (S). The results showed that when the excitation light source has polarization perpendicularly oriented to the stretch direction, the emitted PL presents maximum intensity in the orientation S, and a minimum in the direction orthogonal to S. In order to understand this interesting phenomenon, we employ theoretical simulations at the atomistic level. We use classical molecular dynamics to simulate amorphous PPV films, non-stretched and stretched, from which we find a tendency of overall alignment of PV units to S, and of local clustering in herring-bone and π-stacking partial symmetries. Our study of optical activity of these kinds of clusters, performed through a quantum semi-empirical method, allows us to explain this polarization conversion behavior, and indicates the possibility of using underivatized PPV as the active layer for polarized electroluminescent devices.

In 2000, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Hideki Shirakawa, Alan G. MacDiarmid, and Alan J. Heeger “for the discovery and development of electrically conductive polymers.” While this award was in reference to their collaborative efforts on conducting polyacetylene in the mid-to-late 1970s, the narrative leading up to these efforts began in 1967 with the production of polyacetylene plastic films via what has been called a "fortuitous error." At the heart of this discovery were Shirakawa and a visiting Korean scientist, Hyung Chick Pyun. The current report provides background on Pyun and, for the first time, presents his version of the events leading to the discovery of polyacetylene films in order to provide new insight into this important historical event.
