History of growth hormone therapy

Abstract: Although the importance of the pituitary gland for growth was recognized in late 19th century, Growth hormone (GH) therapy was made available for severely GH-deficient children and adolescents only in late 1950s. Use of GH for other conditions was limited because of the limited supply of human pituitary-derived hormone. With unlimited availability of recombinant human GH (rhGH), the scenario of GH treatment has been changed enormously. Currently there is ever increasing list of indications of GH treatment in c… Show more

“…Growth hormone (GH) has been used as an elective treatment for severely GH-deficient children and adolescents since the 1960s [1]. Due to the limited availability of human pituitary-derived hormone, GH use for other conditions related to short stature could not be seriously considered until the mid-1980s, when recombinant human GH (r-hGH) became available, thus opening up access to GH treatment to children and adolescents with causes of short stature other than GH deficiency (GHD) [2].…”

“…The transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease in some patients treated with human pituitary GH, as well as a dwindling supply, necessitated the development of a recombinant product [14,15]. Recombinant hGH has been commercially available since 1985, approved for the use in various GH disorders [2,16].…”
