The integration of history of science (HOS) into science teaching plays a crucial role to address many shortcomings of traditional science teaching in middle schools, due to its close relationship to the nature of science (NOS) and to its ability to reveal the interconnectedness of science to other disciplines. The purpose of this study is to improve seventh grade students’ course engagement and motivation and their understanding of scientific concepts within the unit of “Force and Motion” through the use of history of science-based stories. The study was conducted according to an action research approach. Five stories based on the history of science were developed and administered by one of the researchers in their 7th grade science class. The iterative reflective practice took place over seven weeks with 15 students who met twice a week for two consecutive forty-minute sessions. Throughout this process, researcher journals, semi-structured interviews and a survey were employed for data collection. Teaching with history of science-based stories was found to be effective for students’ understanding of concepts related to “force and motion.” The results of the study were also positive with respect to the students’ engagement and motivation. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the nature of science should be addressed explicitly through stories in future research.

Introductory RemarksL'organizzazione del XLI Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana degli Storici della Fisica e dell'Astronomia ha richiesto la presa in carico di decisioni importanti a causa del perdurare, seppur in maniera meno problematica, dell'emergenza sanitaria dovuta alla pandemia da Covid 19. Infatti, a differenza di tante altre società, il Consiglio Direttivo della SISFA ha optato per una organizzazione "ibrida" del congresso, con interventi sia in presenza -in completa sicurezza -che a "a distanza", nonostante le ovvie complicazioni sul piano organizzativo. Tale decisione è stata motivata soprattutto dalla volontà di voler riprendere, almeno in una certa misura, una interazione "dal vivo" tra i vari studiosi, la cui mancanza è stata avvertita pesantemente negli ultimi tempi sia in termini di "produttività scientifica" che anche sul piano culturale, e che solo in parte è stata arginata dall'utilizzo di tecnologie appropriate. Come sede del Congresso, il Museo dei Mezzi di Comunicazione di Arezzo (MUMEC) è sembrata poi una scelta ideale per avviare tale "esperimento", sia per la cortesissima disponibilità del fondatore e nostro socio Fausto Casi e della direttrice Valentina Casi, che qui ringraziamo molto sentitamente, che per le diverse celebrazioni che hanno illuminato l'anno 2021.Innanzitutto, infatti, la ricorrenza del settimo centenario della morte di Dante Alighieri ha fatto nascere l'esigenza di organizzare una sessione speciale sulla scienza (meccanica e astronomia) ai tempi di Dante, che ha visto, tra gli altri illustri relatori, la presenza di un discendente diretto del sommo poeta che ha aperto il Congresso. Un'importante mostra dedicata all'orologeria al tempo di Dante e ai suoi sviluppi, organizzata al MU-MEC ma molto apprezzata anche "a distanza", ha poi fatto da cornice più che appropriata all'evento.Il 2021, però, è stato segnato anche da altre notevoli ricorrenze scientifiche, in cui spiccano innanzitutto i nomi illustri di Johannes Kepler (a 450 anni dalla sua nascita, e a 400 dalla conclusione della pubblicazione della sua Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae), e del gesuita italiano Giovanni Battista Riccioli (a 350 anni dalla sua morte). L'organizzazione di una sessione speciale dedicata, in generale, ai diversi temi concernenti lo sviluppo della prima astronomia moderna è sembrata, quindi, particolarmente doverosa. Il paziente lettore potrà qui ben dar sfogo alla sua curiosità su questi temi sfogliando le pagine che seguono, trovando numerosi contributi di interesse notevole, a partire da quelli degli studiosi appositamente invitati.Ancora, passando in rassegna tra gli studi particolari dei nostri soci che hanno mostrato tutta la ricchezza dei temi trattati dagli studiosi italiani (e non solo), e addentrandoci nella fisica del XX secolo, non si sono potute tralasciare le diverse ricorrenze della nascita di Enrico Fermi (120 anni) e Bruno Touschek (100 anni). Reports of difficulty in physics has been documented over the years, especially at the senior secondary level. The application of mathematics as a tool for understanding physical phenomena and problem-solving is well-established. The use of symbols and mathematical rigour is essential for effective problem-solving in physics. However, the teaching and learning of physics have encountered barriers, as highlighted in the literature on competencies in this field. This study focuses on exploring the interlink, context, and associated barriers in the teaching and learning of physics by reviewing existing literature on the application of mathematics and mathematical symbols. Through a theory synthesis design, the study examined the current state of literature on mathematical problem-solving in physics, as well as the differences between mathematising and the application of mathematics in physics. The competencies required of teachers and students were also highlighted in order to better equip physical sciences teachers to address the challenges faced by students in learning physics. The literature suggests that a well-sequenced approach to topics by both mathematics and physics teachers can facilitate knowledge transfer among students. Teachers are encouraged to provide step-by-step guidance to address students' mathematical deficiencies, particularly in the physics aspect of the physical sciences curriculum at the further education and training (FET) phase. It is recommended that topics between physics and mathematics be aligned and mathematical concepts be pre-teach to enhance students' contextual knowledge transfer.
