HIV Sexual Risk Behavior Over 36 Months of Follow-Up in the World's First HIV Vaccine Efficacy Trial

Abstract: Increased risk behavior among participants in HIV vaccine efficacy trials has been a concern. This study evaluated HIV sexual risk behavior among 5095 HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) and 308 women enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled efficacy trial of a bivalent rgp120 vaccine at 61 sites, primarily in North America. “…First, we were unable to accurately distinguish whether missing risk behavior data was due to the refusal to answer questions on the part of some participants or to their unawareness of the HIV serostatus or drug using behaviors of their regular or casual partners. Future data collection instruments should account for partners of unknown serostatus, as unprotected anal and vaginal sex in these partnerships has predicted (Bartholow et al 2005;Buchbinder et al 2005). Second, we may have underestimated the prevalence of these behaviors in some groups using interviewer-administered questionnaires due to socially desirable reporting.…”

“…Similar results were obtained in other studies using the same product (AIDSVAX) alone, one of the two vaccines in the RV 144 prime-boost protocol. 22,23 Vaccine completion in men and women were about 85%, and both groups were in compliance with the protocol immunization schedule for about 75% of the time. More women (88%) were retained compared with men (85%).…”

Nevertheless, the level of acceptance of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine among parents and adolescents in Western communities remain high [4].…”
