Hodgkin disease developing in patients infected by human immunodeficiency virus results in clinical features and a prognosis similar to those in patients with human immunodeficiency virus-related non-Hodgkin lymphoma

Abstract: Objective To determine the effect of cyclosporin A (CSA) on aggrecanase‐ and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)‐mediated catabolism of proteoglycan (aggrecan) in articular cartilage explants stimulated with interleukin‐1 (IL‐1) in a culture system that mimics early pathologic processes associated with arthritic disease. Methods Proteoglycan (glycosaminoglycan) and lactate quantification, Western immunoblot analyses of aggrecan degradation products, reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction analyses of aggrec… Show more

“…[31][32][33] This could reflect the aggressive behavior of HIV-Ly, and particularly of HL, and the tendency to early relapse or rapid disease progression (2 patients with NHL and 2 with HL in our study progressed within 3 weeks after PBSC collection, before admission for transplantation). 3 Nevertheless, the overall results in the present study remains highly satisfactory, with 50% OS in the entire series of patients, after a median follow-up of 45 months.…”

“…Engraftment was prompt and satisfactory, with adequate long-term hematologic reconstitution, in all patients except one who had delayed platelet engraftment and suboptimal reconstitution (this patient had cytopenia before BEAM). Neutrophil engraftment, defined as an absolute neutrophil count greater than 0.50 ϫ 10 9 /L (500/mm 3 ), occurred at a median of 10 days (range, 8-14 days), and platelet engraftment, defined as self-supporting platelet count greater than 20 ϫ 10 9 /L (20 ϫ 10 3 / mm 3 ), occurred at a median of 12 days (range, 8-120 days).…”

“…Since 1985, the term AIDS-related lymphomas (ARLs) has been used in literature to describe specifically those NHLs that are present in HIV-infected patients. Although some cases of HIV-related HL had been initially reported [16,17], its increased incidence in conjunction with HIV was not considered to be clearly demonstrated, until after 1992 when an excess incidence of HL was found in HIV-infected patients [16][17][18][19].…”

“…Iatrogenic immunosuppression such as seen in post-transplant setting18 or during the course of immunomodulatory therapy for autoimmune conditions is associated with HL development 19 20. Patients with HIV infection have a significant increase in the incidence of HL 1 3 4 21. Although our patient did not have any of these conditions, a possible explanation could be the immunodeficiency state associated with the first haematopoietic malignancy—extranodal pleuropulmonary MZL.…”
