Hogan Personality Inventory

Abstract: This article describes the construction and validation of 7 scales for the California Psychological Inventory (Gough, 1975,1987) based on a socioanalytic interpretation of the Five-Factor Model. The scale construction differed from traditional rational and empirical approaches in that it regarded responses to personality items as speech acts-skilled performances that create an effect on an audience. Expected group differences across 10 samples (total N = 763) and relations with other personality inventory scor… Show more

“…These personality characteristics allow them to vary their behavior more effectively than those who are less extroverted. They are therefore more likely to deal with novel and unfamiliar intercultural interactions more effectively than introverts who are more limited, uncertain and inhibited (Hogan, 1986). Moreover, the adventurous disposition of the extroverts increases the tendency for curiosity about other cultures and exposure to new situations, and motivates them to try to participate in different cultural experiences.…”

“…For example, Rosenberg's ( 1965 ) notion of self-concept stability focuses on the temporal stability of self-beliefs, whereas the constructs of role variability (Block, 1961a) and self-consistency (Gergen & Morse, 1967) address the internal consistency of self-beliefs. In addition, the Hogan Personality Inventory Identity scale (Hogan, 1986) and the Identity Integration scale (O'Brien & Epstein, 1988) focus on generalized certainty about the self, combined with manifestations of certainty such as decisiveness and well-defined longterm goals.…”

“…Facets include friendliness, gregariousness, assertiveness, activity level, excitement seeking, and cheerfulness. Hogan (1986) and Hough (1997) suggest that this factor can be divided into sociability or affiliativetiveness on the one hand (e.g., friendliness, gregariousness, cheerfulness), and ambition or potency on the other (e.g., assertiveness, activity level, excitement seeking). The factor of optimism is likely related to extraversion-it is a scale in the IPIP (Goldberg, 2001), and is related to the well-being scale in the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) (Gough, 1975).…”
