Holistic control of ship noise emissions

Abstract: The sustainability of anthropogenic activities at\ud sea is recently gaining more and more attention. As regards\ud shipping, emissions from ships into the environment\ud of various nature (engine exhaust gases, anti-fouling\ud paints leaching, ballast exchange, releases at sea of oil\ud and other noxious liquid or solid cargoes, of sewage and\ud of garbage) have been recognized as sources of pollution\ud and therefore controlled and limited since a long time.\ud The subject of noise emission has been identifi… Show more

“…Only well-identified transits were taken into consideration in the analysis, i.e., those not affected by the noise of the truck traffic. Furthermore, each noise event should have occurred in a period where wind speed was less than 5 m/s, no rainfall was present, and the Beaufort number of the sea was lower than 3, as also suggested by Borelli et al [58].…”

“…1). The ship, for her dimensions and characteristics, represents a very complex noise source [9]. The different plants present on board, devoted to propulsion and to the other operational functions of the ship, are all effective contributors to the noise field inside and outside the vessel.…”

“…Also Davide Borelli, Tomaso Gaggero, Enrico Rizzuto and Corrado Schenone in "Holistic control of ship noise emissions" [8] presented a holistic approach for evaluating and for managing ship noise by considering noise emissions in air, water and indoor. The work aimed to find the best solutions in order to set limits to the ship emissions.…”
